Churches That Play Together Stay Together

Pastors report the congregational gains of letting loose as a body. In its new Households of Faith report, Barna researchers claim that one of the many reasons “vibrant households” stand out from others is because they engage in “meaningful, fun, quality time with both their housemates and extended household members.” That includes playing games together (32%), sharing meals (63% eat breakfast as a family and 75% eat dinner as a family), and enjoying other leisure... Airlines fly empty Boeing planes back home from Florida after 737 Max groundings

One day after President Trump ordered the grounding of the advanced Boeing 737 “Max” jetliners over safety concerns, airlines that operate them in South Florida juggled schedules Thursday and made arrangements to fly empty planes back to their home bases. American Airlines — which operates a far-flung Latin American and U.S. hub at Miami International Airport — appeared to be the airline affected the most. Airport spokesman Greg Chin said American was still dealing with delays and... Read More

Hail taxis: Broward finds them a cheaper ride than county shuttles

There’s a faster, more convenient and cheaper way for people needing Broward County’s special transportation shuttles to get around. It’s called a taxi. A yearlong, limited pilot program let participants take taxi rides paid for by the county instead of using the county’s paratransit shuttle service. The county has been paying up to $15 for each taxi trip in the Rider’s Choice program. Commissioners will consider March 28 increasing the maximum to $18. Even at that cost, the taxis... Read More

Roger Stone set to stand trial on Nov. 5 in Russia investigation

Now the former political advisor to President Trump is struggling to stay in the good graces of U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson while awaiting trial in the Russia investigation. He appeared to get a reprieve Thursday when he returned to Jackson’s courtroom for a status conference. There were no fireworks over whether Stone had violated... Read More

Power and Pastors: Part 2

James, the half-brother of Jesus, writes, “Anyone, then, who knows the good he ought to do and doesn’t do it, sins” (James 4:17). Applying Andy Crouch’s definition of power—the ability to make something of the world—to this verse would suggest that those who know what they should do (or refrain from doing) in order to make something better of the world for the glory of God and... Police call him a robber but Hollywood jeweler Daniel Setton calls the man — who walked into his business and tried to take a gold chain — a disgruntled customer. “It wasn’t a robbery,” he said. “He was just a stupid, a stupid guy.” Surveillance video released Wednesday showed the man strolling into DHS Oakwood Jewelers at 2897 Stirling Road about 2:30 p.m. on March 2 and casually walking behind the counter. “He bought a chain here, two or three months ago, and it...
