Three 18-year-old girls were seriously hurt in Pembroke Pines on Friday morning when their car rear-ended another vehicle and then crashed into a tree, police said.
It was unclear whether the girls were students, but the crash happened at 7:06 a.m. less than a mile from West Broward High School, according to police.
All three girls were seriously injured and taken to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood for emergency treatment, said Sgt. John Baker, a police spokesman.
The driver was Breanna Henry. Her passengers were Amber Rosa and Shanheem Pierre, Baker said. All three were from Miami.
The girls were headed north on U.S. 27 when they rear-ended a Chevrolet that was slowing for a red light at the intersection where Pines Boulevard dead ends into the highway, Pembroke Pines police said.
When the girls in the Toyota hit the Chevrolet, it was pushed into the intersection where the Chevrolet crashed into a GMC coming from the east and making a right turn onto U.S. 27, according to police.
After rear-ending the Chevrolet, the Toyota continued to drift until it hit a tree in the median, police said.
Paramedics from Pembroke Pines Fire Rescue helped treat and transport the girls.
No one else was injured in the crash.
The drivers of the Chevrolet, Jose Penate-Aguiar, 61, of Miami, and the GMC, Alberto Torres, 73, of Pembroke Pines, remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities, police said.
