Boca Raton man faces DUI manslaughter charges in rollover crash that killed two and injured one

A Boca Raton man accused of driving under the influence when he crashed into another car in West Boca, killing two people and critically injuring a third, has been arrested two months after the crash, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday.

Jamie Josue Gomez Escobedo, 35, was driving a 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee south on U.S. 441, near the intersection of Kimberly Road, about 10:30 p.m. Feb. 1 and hit the passenger side of a 2021 Nissan Rogue that was traveling west, attempting to cross U.S. 441 at a green traffic light, the Sheriff’s Office said.

The Nissan rolled over until it came to a stop upside down at a corner of the intersection. Driver Arie Oberlender, 82, of New York, and passenger Golda Oberlender, 79, of New York, were killed and pronounced dead at the scene.

The second passenger, Frida Bross, of Boca Raton, was critically injured and taken to Delray Medical Center, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Gomez Escobedo was not injured. He was arrested Tuesday afternoon and faces charges on two counts of DUI manslaughter and one count of driving under the influence causing serious bodily injury, the Sheriff’s Office said.
