A man was killed after attacking deputies with a machete in Oakland Park Thursday morning, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.
A little after 7 a.m., a suspicious person was reported in the 300 block of Northeast 38th Street, the Sheriff’s Office said. When deputies arrived, they encountered a man armed with a machete. At some point, the man “attacked the deputies with the machete and a deputy involved shooting occurred,” said Miranda Grossman, a spokesperson for BSO.
Multiple deputies fired their guns, Grossman said. None were injured.
Paramedics arrived and took the man with gunshot wounds to Broward Health Medical Center as a Level 1 trauma alert, according to Shannon Vezina, a spokesperson for Oakland Park Fire Rescue. He was later pronounced dead.
Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting, Grossman said, and the deputies involved have been placed on administrative leave, as is standard for deputy-involved shootings.
