Man faces weapon, drug charges after Deerfield Beach shooting

A 19-year-old man was arrested Saturday hours after a deadly shooting in Deerfield Beach on weapon- and drug-related charges.

Shortly before 7:30 p.m. Saturday, a 911 caller reported a man armed with a gun near the 900 block of Southwest 14th Street. Broward Sheriff’s deputies were at the scene when they heard one gunshot nearby, the Sheriff’s Office said in a news release Monday afternoon.

A few blocks away, deputies found Jonathan Isaiah Johnson, 19, who had been shot, the Sheriff’s Office said. Johnson died at Broward Health North.

Sheriff’s personnel in a helicopter saw Kenneth Philpart Jr., 19, in his underwear holding a gun in the area near where the shooting happened, the Sheriff’s Office said. He fled but was later found hiding in a trashcan.

Philpart Jr. was taken to the hospital to be cleared. He told investigators the shooting was in self-defense, according to BSO.

Philpart Jr. has not been charged in connection with the shooting. As of Monday afternoon, he faced charges of possession of a firearm by an adjudicated delinquent, possession of fentanyl with intent to sell, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, improper exhibition of a firearm and resisting an officer without violence.

The Sheriff’s Office will present the case to the State Attorney’s Office after its investigation to decide if he will be charged in connection with the shooting.

Philpart Jr. had not been booked into the jail as of Monday afternoon.
