Electric scooter driver dies Christmas Day after collision in Dania Beach

The driver of an electric scooter died from injuries he suffered in a collision with a car in Dania Beach, the Broward Sheriff’s Office said Thursday.

James Small, 60, of Dania Beach, died Christmas Day at Memorial Regional Hospital, three days after the crash occurred on Stirling Road.

In a news release, the Sheriff’s Office said Gregory Ornstein-Bowers, 39, of Fort Lauderdale, was driving a 2024 Hyundai Tuscon west on Stirling in the center lane shortly before 4 p.m. Sunday. Small, meanwhile,  “was traveling southbound across Stirling Road from north to south.”

“Ornstein-Bowers told detectives that he did not see the scooter rider until he was in front of him and attempted to swerve to avoid a crash,” the statement said. “However, his vehicle struck the left side of the scooter. The crash caused Small to be ejected and come to a rest in the center thru lane.”

Small died Wednesday.

The Sheriff’s Office statement made no mention of charges being filed. It said detectives with the agency’s traffic homicide unit are still investigating the crash.
