U.S. Coast Guard responds to capsized boat near Port Everglades

On Monday, the U.S. Coast Guard responded to a 7:45 a.m. alert about a 20-foot capsized blue-and-white boat near Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale.

Petty Officer 3rd Class Eric Rodriguez said search teams were sent by helicopter and boat looking for people who may have fallen overboard. However, by early morning, Rodriguez said the owner had been located, and the Coast Guard learned no one was onboard at the time of the incident.

“It is not a distress situation,” Rodriguez said. “The owner is trying to coordinate with a commercial salvage company and investigating how the boat became free.”

Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue initially had also participated in the search but withdrew after finding no sign of anyone near the capsized vessel.
