Uncle arrested after 6-year-old nephew accidentally shot himself in Tamarac

A 25-year-old Tamarac man was arrested Wednesday, a little over a month after his young nephew accidentally shot and killed himself while in his uncle’s care, the Broward Sheriff’s Office said.

Carika Hall was watching 6-year-old Odaine Hall in the afternoon of Sept. 30 when the boy got access to an unsecured gun and accidentally fired it, the Sheriff’s Office said. Deputies and Tamarac Fire Rescue arrived to the apartment complex in the 5600 block of Rock Island Road and found Odaine dead from one gunshot.

The Sheriff’s Office has not released information about whether Hall witnessed the shooting, who owned the gun or how Odaine was able to get it.

Hall was being held in the Broward Main Jail as of Thursday, facing one count of culpable negligence and one count of neglect of a child. Court records were not available Thursday afternoon.

So far in 2024, there have been nearly 1,200 unintentional shootings throughout the country, according to a database maintained by the Gun Violence Archive, a nonprofit organization that tracks incidents of gun violence. At least 80 happened in Florida and at least 31 in South Florida region, resulting in six deaths.
