Publix ice cream truck rolling into South Florida this summer, serving up free scoops

Ubiquitous supermarket chain Publix is literally rolling out a summer publicity blitz — in the delicious, old-fashioned form of a roving ice cream truck.

The vehicle will visit Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach during one weekend in July as part of a wider southeastern U.S. tour to promote new, limited-edition flavors including “Marry Me Strawberry” and “Lemon Berry Bliss.”

Customers can sample scoops for free during each truck stop, which Publix spokesperson Lindsey Willis says will include “a photo booth, games and music.”

“The ice cream truck is a newer way we are able to surprise and delight customers and our communities,” Willis tells the South Florida Sun Sentinel. “Come cool off, enjoy a refreshing treat on us, and join in on the fun and games.”

Where can you find this temptation-on-wheels? The South Florida schedule includes stops from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on:

    • Saturday, July 6, at Las Olas Oceanside Park, 3000 E. Las Olas Blvd., Fort Lauderdale
    • Sunday, July 7, at a Brightline station, 501 Evernia St., West Palm Beach

Willis says the supermarket brand began trotting out its truck last summer, and when crowds melted over its offerings, Publix was encouraged enough to try an ice cream reprise.

Limited-edition flavors available on the truck include Chocolate Cookie Quarry (chocolate ice cream swirled with cookie chunks and chocolate sandwich cookies); Cold Brew Cookies & Crème (coffee-flavored ice cream with crème-filled chocolate cookie pieces); Marry Me Strawberry (ribboned with strawberry-flavored sauce and pieces of white chocolate-flavored strawberry pecan bark); and Lemon Berry Bliss (filled with lemonade-flavored flakes and blueberry-flavored swirls).

The seasonal ice cream flavors are available in stores now through Aug. 30 in half-gallon containers.

These will join Publix’s year-round offerings: Mint Chocolate Chip, Moose Tracks (vanilla ice cream packed with peanut butter cups and swirls of Moose Tracks fudge), and Lactose Free Vanilla.

The Publix spokesperson says music will be piped in, old-school, from a speaker, but declined to say who would be on the playlist. Here’s hoping it’s accented with South Florida musicians.

Can you imagine Pitbull, Flo Rida and Ariana Grande beckoning ice cream lovers from afar? Just maybe, for every ice cream passed out, we’ll hear someone in a DJ Khaled-style voice shouting, “Another one.”
