Strong thunderstorms forecast in South Florida; expect rainy weather Thursday

The National Weather Service warned of strong and severe thunderstorms expected across South Florida into Wednesday evening, and more rainy weather is expected Thursday.

The northern swath of the region was likely to have the strongest activity, the weather service said, but any part of the region could experience intense thunderstorms. The storms could include frequent lightning, strong wind, small hail and localized flooding.

The eastern portion of the region has a limited risk of tornado activity through Thursday morning.

“An unsettled afternoon is expected with scattered to numerous showers and storms across the area,” forecasters said. “The strongest storms may contain small hail, strong winds, and a brief tornado cannot be ruled out.”

Later Wednesday, the weather should “dry out for the evening hours” and late Wednesday night “into early Thursday morning there could be again another round of showers and thunderstorms over the eastern areas of South Florida,” the weather service said.

Skies should remain overcast. There’s a 70% to 80% chance of rain in coastal metro areas.

Thursday will see a chance of showers and Friday should be partly sunny.

The weekend should remain breezy and party sunny.
