Driver swerved to avoid merging car, died after crashing into tree in Tamarac

The driver of a pickup truck died in Tamarac on Sunday after he swerved to avoid a car merging into his lane and ended up crashing into a tree, the Broward Sheriff’s Office said.

Gibson Metellus, 40, of Lauderdale Lakes, was driving a 2001 Ford F150 west on West Commercial Boulevard about 2 p.m. Sunday. The driver of the other unidentified car started moving into the lane Metellus was in, but the two drivers did not crash into one another, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Metellus abruptly moved left, drove over the center median and continued moving west until it hit the tree near the 6400 block of West Commercial Boulevard, the Sheriff’s Office said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Sheriff’s Office said speeding is considered a factor in the crash. It was not clear Monday afternoon whether the second driver stayed at the scene or if the investigation is continuing.
