Thursday was the hottest Oct. 12 on record in South Florida

The National Weather Service said that Miami set a new record high temperature for the day on Thursday, with a high of 93 degrees, topping the old record, set in 2020, by 1 degree.

West Palm Beach had an observed high of 93 degrees, which tied the record high temperature set in 1946.

Records go back to 1888.

Forecasters also warned of extreme heat in South Florida over the next few days, stating that the region faced a “significant excessive heat risk” Thursday night, Friday and Saturday. That means the heat index will reach 108 to 112 degrees, warning that “dangerous and potentially deadly heat stroke (is) likely with prolonged exposure.”

The heat index is the “feels-like” temperature, which combines relative humidity and air temperature. In high humidity, human sweat won’t evaporate, and the body can’t cool itself off.

September was the hottest September ever recorded globally, and also was the most anomalously hot compared to the average September temperature over time.
