The driver of a 49cc scooter and a passenger died in a crash with an SUV on Interstate 75 in Weston on Thursday afternoon, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
The driver and passenger on the scooter were traveling slowly in the center lane of I-75 shortly after 3 p.m., about half a mile away from Indian Trace, as the driver of a 2013 Nissan Rogue SUV traveled in the same lane, Lt. Indiana Miranda, an FHP spokesperson, said in an email late Thursday.
As the SUV driver, a 36-year-old man from Miami, neared the scooter, he “was unable to take evasive action,” Miranda said, and the front of the SUV hit the back of the scooter. The scooter fell onto its right side and slid in the center lane of the interstate, ejecting the driver and passenger.
The scooter’s driver, who was pronounced dead at the scene, came to a stop on the inside lane of the interstate, Miranda said. The passenger was in the center lane, and the SUV driver had control of the car when he stopped on the outside paved shoulder.
The passenger was flown to Broward Health Medical Center in critical condition. Miranda said about 9:30 p.m. that he died.
Neither person on the scooter were wearing a helmet, Miranda said. Their identities have not been released.
As of late Thursday, there was no sign that the SUV driver was impaired or was engaging in any criminal activity, Miranda said.
