Man killed in crash that flipped trailer truck, shut down Florida’s Turnpike in Davie

A man is dead following a crash that flipped a trailer truck on its side and shut down all northbound lanes of Florida’s Turnpike in Davie early Saturday morning.

Around 4 a.m., a 41-year-old man from Miami Gardens was driving a Honda Civic north on Florida’s Turnpike in the outside travel lane, approaching Interstate 595, according to a Florida Highway Patrol news release.

The trailer truck, driven by a 47-year-old man from Homestead, was also heading north on the turnpike, in the outside center travel lane. The Civic then switched lanes into the path of the trailer truck, and the two crashed, according to the release, causing the car to become attached to the front of the truck.

Both vehicles then went through the inside travel lanes and into the inside paved shoulder, hitting the concrete median wall and flipping the truck onto its side, “still entangled” with the Civic, according to the release. The two vehicles came to a final rest, still attached to one another, in the inside shoulder and travel lanes.

The driver of the Civic was pronounced dead on scene by Davie Fire Rescue, the release said. The driver of the trailer truck had no injuries.

All northbound lanes of the turnpike remain blocked, FHP said around 1 p.m. Saturday.
