Broward schools select their new superintendent, Peter Licata

Peter Licata, an administrator for Palm Beach County schools, will become Broward schools’ next superintendent.

He was chosen 7-2 over East Baton Rouge Superintendent Sito Narcisse, who got the votes of board members Brenda Fam and Torey Alston. No board members selected Luis Solano, deputy superintendent.

The vote happened during a low-key meeting that attracted few spectators and only one public speaker, LGBTQ activist Michael Rajner, who supported Licata.

It wasn’t clear how the vote would go. A few weeks ago, it looked like internal candidate Valerie Wanza had the edge, with enthusiastic support among employee groups. And Allen Zeman had voiced support for Narcisse up until the final vote.

Licata impressed board members by showing a detailed knowledge of Broward schools and dealing a plan to turn the B-rated district into an A-rated district.
