Wild Florida monkey colony to get first enclosure as work begins on new sanctuary

Vincent Palmeri of Rockscapes clears a wooded area just east of the Fort Lauderdale airport on Monday as construction begins on a sanctuary for a colony of African vervet monkeys that has survived on a wedge of swampy forest for more than 70 years. Dania Beach Vervet Project, a nonprofit organization, will house the monkeys in a structure complete with fences, medical care and regular meals. (Susan Stocker / South Florida Sun Sentinel)
