Drones may soon soar into the most violent, unreachable parts of hurricanes to improve forecasting

And the boundary layer of a hurricane, basically the layer from the ground to 4,000 feet high, is so unforgiving that even the NOAA P-3 Hurricane Hunter aircraft won’t attempt passing through. Ultimately NOAA would like to use the drone mostly at the lowest levels of a hurricane, about 1,000 feet above the ocean surface.
