How we forged a compromise 25 years ago to pass the Everglades Forever Act | Opinion

How did the Everglades Forever Act get its name? After seven months of legislative war, I was home the weekend before the final vote. Watching the sun come up with my young daughter on Saturday morning, reflecting on the experience, it occurred to me that the bill was such a big deal that it needed a name, not simply a number. My eyes wandered to the painting above our fireplace, a wedding present from the great Keys watercolorist Millard Wells. The painting’s name was Everglades Forever, a tranquil scene of sawgrass and roseate spoonbills, and there was my answer. I amended the bill when I returned to Tallahassee, and the rest is history.
