A 2-year-old girl was killed in a Sunday morning collision on Interstate 95 in Deerfield Beach that closed the southbound lanes near Sample Road for more than five hours, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
The girl was in a 2014 Toyota Corolla that crashed with a 2019 Kia Forte. A 5-year-old girl also in the Corolla is on life support, officials said.
The names of the two girls, both from Deerfield Beach, have not been released. Neither child had a restraining device, officials said.
The driver of the Toyota was identified as Rashida Raby, 34, of Deerfield Beach. She was taken with serious injuries to Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale for treatment, Broward Fire-Rescue officials said. It’s unclear whether she is related to the girls.
The driver of the Kia was identified as Zachary Schott, 26, of Illinois. He was taken with serious injuries to North Broward Hospital, the FHP reported.
The crash is currently under investigation by Corporal Julio Torres. Charges are pending, officials said. Alcohol was not involved, officials said.
One of the girls was flown by air to the hospital and the other was taken by ambulance, Broward Fire-Rescue officials said.
Southbound I-95 south of Southwest 10th Street reopened to traffic shortly before 5 p.m.
