At Monday night’s Carbonell Awards, better known as South Florida’s “theater prom,” the evening’s top-scoring king and queen went to Palm Beach Dramaworks’ haunting drama “Indecent” and Slow Burn Theatre Company’s exuberant musical “Memphis.”
Palm Beach theaters collected the biggest haul of trophies during the April 8 award ceremony at the Amaturo Theater at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. Actors, singers and other South Florida theater luminaries marked the event’s 43rd anniversary.
Theaters in Palm Beach County picked up 10 of the Carbonell’s 20 awards, seven of which came from Palm Beach Dramaworks in West Palm Beach. One Broward theater, Slow Burn Theatre Company in Fort Lauderdale, won four awards, while two Miami-Dade theaters – Zoetic Stage and Miami New Drama – collected six awards.
