A man already facing drug and weapons charges in Miami-Dade County is in Broward County’s Main Jail facing more charges that include armed sexual battery, kidnapping, burglary and grand theft.
Shawn Michael Wright, 28, was booked into Broward’s jail on Wednesday, records show.
Wright is accused of a pre-dawn crime spree on Dec. 12 that involved break-ins in at least two homes and three vehicles in the upscale Hollywood Oaks community resulting in the theft of more than $8,500 worth of valuables, police said.
During one burglary, a woman was grabbed by the throat, forced outside, threatened with death at knife-point and raped, according to an arrest warrant in the case.
Security cameras at three locations recorded the suspect wearing dark clothing, a cap, gloves and a mask, and carrying a flashlight and a folding knife as he tried to pry open locked doors.
Surveillance video from a Nov. 20 vehicle burglary in the same Hollywood neighborhood showed the suspect dressed and acting the same way. Credit cards stolen from the vehicle were used later that day at a Ross store, Dunkin’ Donuts shop, and Mobil gas station in Miami-Dade, police said.
Surveillance videos from those businesses helped identify Wright and a police stakeout tracked him to the Sun ‘n Surf Inn on the 11100 block of Biscayne Boulevard near the Mobil gas station, investigators said.
Miami-Dade and Hollywood police arrested Wright on Dec. 18. A search of his motel room turned up clothing, a flashlight and knife that matched those worn and used by the burglar in the videos, police said.
Detectives also seized two cellphones in Wright’s possession. Among other things, the cellphones had pictures of Wright, pictures of a replica Louis Vuitton purse similar to one stolen from the woman he’s accused of raping and numerous online searches of news reports about the burglaries and rape he is accused of committing, investigators said.
Records also showed he had violated probation on a home invasion robbery case in Michigan.
Wright is being held without bond, records show.
