A state legislator representing Broward County is back in Tallahassee after missing the beginning of the legislative session to complete her cancer treatments.
State Rep. Kristin Jacobs, D-Coconut Creek, said she was happy to return to duty Monday.
Daily chemotherapy and radiation forced her to miss the first part of the session, which started on March 5. The 60-day session will run through May 3.
Jacobs said both Republicans and Democrats helped her with her bills while she was gone.
“It confirms my faith in the process,” she said. “There are a lot of good people here for the right reasons.”
Jacobs was diagnosed with colorectal cancer about two years ago. She said a tiny portion of cancer was missed during her initial treatment.
Jacobs said she will undergo surgery after the session ends, and she does not expect to miss any more meetings. She said the cancer does not appear to have metastasized (spread).
She’s sponsored bills to increase water storage in South Florida and create a compensation fund for victims of the Parkland school shooting.
