An impromptu gathering to memorialize the life of a friend was interrupted Friday night by the blast of gunfire that claimed a life, authorities said.
Freddie Calloway, 41, died at the scene near the 700 block of Phippen-Waiters Road in Dania Beach, said Gina Carter, a spokeswoman for the Broward Sheriff’s Office.
Calloway, of Dania Beach, was among the dozens gathered to commemorate the life and death of Percy Walker, 55, who had died about a week earlier, she said.
Walker’s death and Calloway’s homicide are not related, Carter said.
Detectives urge “witnesses to come forward and help the victim’s family find justice,” she said.
The shots were fired about 10:30 p.m. when “an unidentified person approached the group and shot Calloway,” Carter said. No one else was injured.
Detectives believe the shooter fled in a vehicle.
“The motive for the shooting remains unclear,” Carter said. The investigation is ongoing.
