NSU Athletics Coordinates School Supply Drive

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Starting off the 2018-19 school year with the community in mind, the Nova Southeastern athletics department came together to donate over 830 school supplies to the students at Davie Elementary.

A group of student-athletes traveled across campus to deliver the supplies, spending about an hour chatting and getting to know some of the students in Ms. Silvers’ first grade class.

Here is what a couple of the NSU student-athletes had to say about their experience:

Aldana Foigel – Women’s Golf
“Going to Davie Elementary was a great experience. I had a lot of fun interacting with the kids and loved to watch them have fun talking about college and their future careers. I will definitely come back to spend more time with them!”

Sydney Lageyre – Softball
“Going to Davie Elementary school to drop off the school supplies was a great experience. It felt great to put a smile on the face of every child in that classroom.”

Kyle Kilbourne – Baseball
“Being with the kids at Davie elementary and donating some of those school supplies is annually a proud moment for me and my involvement through SAAC. I loved listening to the kids get so excited to talk to us student-athletes and asking us questions, and it’s truly humbling to know that just a short time with them could leave an impact they could carry with them for a while. I had such a blast making up handshakes, watching some cool dances, and seeing their faces after delivering the school supplies. I hope I can go back and volunteer more with them, especially knowing that I never had the opportunity to meet college athletes when I was in elementary school, and use that chance to make sure they always have a new friend and role model.”

Megan Piggott – Women’s Basketball
“Seeing the joy and excitement of those kids made my day. It put a lot of meaning behind why we come together as athletes each year to collect school supplies. The supplies we were able to drop off will impact those kids throughout the entire year.”

Maddie Uilk – Volleyball
“I have been volunteering at Davie Elementary since my freshman year and have built many relationships there over the years. I usually go by myself or with my friend on the Swim team, David Hudson and I’ve noticed that Davie Elementary gets forgotten about a lot. When NSU Athletics puts on events like the school supply drive or the t-shirt drive, it impacts not only the school, but the kids more than imagined. When everyone from all of the sports came to deliver supplies to Ms. Silver’s class, it was an amazing experience to see the kids connect so well with the NSU Athletes. Even to this day, they still ask about them. We are hoping we can get a group together to go to field day later in the year, but the School Supply Drive was an incredible first start in the right direction!”
