Shark Family,
This past Sunday, the resilience of the Shark spirit was again on display as we hosted our annual Sharky’s award show, but this time in the virtual space to prove what Sharks can do when faced with adversity. From the time we moved into this period of uncertainty, the event’s committee dedicated themselves to making sure that this event would continue and we would utilize all of our resources to ensure that our 2019-20 student-athletes receive the recognition they deserve for their accomplishments in competition and in the classroom – providing a togetherness as the semester comes to a close that is unique to our annual awards.
Instead of simply providing a distraction in these unprecedented times, the Sharky’s gave us some time to be together again, though we are spread all over the world. We saw watch parties, student-athletes and staff dressed for the red carpet, lots of pets and student-athletes collaborating from their homes with athletics staff to give their peers their due recognition. It was truly an amazing first-class experience to have our Shark family back together for one more afternoon this academic year. Congratulations to all our winners and nominees on what all of you have accomplished this year.
Just as in previous years, the awards show gets us ready to roll into finals week, and this year is no different. After one of the best fall semesters on record, in which 73 percent of our Sharks were over a 3.0 GPA and every single team achieved that same gold standard, we are expecting our student-athletes to attack this final academic hurdle to finish out this term strong with the same mentality that has made them champions in the arena of competition.
To our graduating seniors, as you complete the final steps to concluding your time as a Shark, know that we are proud of you and cannot overstate our appreciation for what you have brought to our culture, our campus and our family. Though times may be uncertain now, your perseverance to battle through adversity will help you to finish like the champions you are. This will not only garner your name on that earned diploma but will pay dividends in the very near future as you leave the Shark Tank as graduates.
I hope everyone takes the opportunity to check out the Sharky’s broadcast linked below or watch it again as Shark Nation prepares for the final stretch of the 2019-20 academic year.
I hope you and your families continue to stay safe and healthy during this time.
Go Sharks!
