Nine injured in wrong-way crash near Fort Lauderdale beach

Nine people were hospitalized after a wrong-way crash near Las Olas beach during Tuesday morning rush hour, officials say.

A black BMW was driving westbound in the eastbound lanes of East Las Olas Boulevard “at a high rate of speed,” coming from the direction of the beach about 8:40 a.m. when the crash occurred at the intersection with Riviera Isle Drive, according to Frank Guzman, a spokesperson for Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue.

Three other vehicles, a white Toyota Camry, a silver Dodge Ram pickup truck and a white Dodge Journey all became involved in the crash, though Guzman said it was unclear exactly what unfolded.

All of the people injured in the crash were adults. They were all transported to Broward Health Medical Center, seven with minor injuries and two with serious injuries.

Pictures shared by Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue show a destroyed Dodge Journey and BMW in the middle of East Las Olas Boulevard.

The road will be closed “for some time,” Fire Rescue said.
