Unconscious woman rescued from West Park apartment fire, official says

A woman was recovering at a hospital Saturday night after she was found unconscious by firefighters as smoke filled a West Park apartment, according a fire official.

The woman was discovered at about 8:15 p.m. by Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue firefighters in the rear bedroom of an apartment in the 4000 block of SW 23rd St., where a “small fire” was extinguished in the kitchen area, according to a release from Battalion Chief Michael B. Kane.

The firefighters forced entry into the one apartment after they saw heavy black smoke coming from it. Kane said the firefighters provided “advanced life support” to the woman and brought her to a hospital, where she was recovering Saturday.

The cause of the fire remained unknown Saturday, and the state Fire Marshal will investigate, Kane said in the release.
