A customer at a 7-Eleven in Dania Beach shot two men, killing one, after he and a clerk were robbed on Saturday evening, deputies said.
The customer was in the parking lot of the 7-Eleven at 800 Stirling Road when Justin Kessel, 19, robbed him at gunpoint, the Broward Sheriff’s Office said in a news release Monday. Kessel then went inside and robbed the clerk, while the man got a gun from his car.
Kessel ran back toward the man after robbing the clerk, and he shot at Kessel multiple times, the Sheriff’s Office said.
The customer, whose name has not been released, held Kessel at gunpoint while deputies were on the way. While holding Kessel, a man driving a 2025 Honda CR-V “attempted to run him over,” the robbery victim told deputies, according to the news release.
The robbery victim then shot at the Honda, striking the driver, Melvin Presley, 40, according to the Sheriff’s Office. He was shot multiple times.
Presley’s car was found about a quarter mile away from the gas station in the 100 block of Phippen Waiters Road, the Sheriff’s Office said. Paramedics took Presley to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood, where he was later pronounced dead.
Kessel was taken to Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale and survived. He had not been booked into the jail as of Monday afternoon. He is facing two counts of robbery with a firearm, court records show.
The robbery victim was detained, questioned and released. Detectives and the State Attorney’s Office are working to determine whether charges will be filed against him, the Sheriff’s Office said.
The Sheriff’s Office said the circumstances of the robbery and shootings remain under investigation.
Kessel, of Hollywood, and Presley did not have prior criminal history in Broward County court records. Florida Department of Corrections records show Presley was released from a Florida prison last November after serving a five-year sentence on robbery- and grand-theft related charges in Collier County.
