One killed, two hospitalized in wrong-way crash on Sawgrass Expressway

A woman was killed and two other people were hospitalized after a wrong-way crash on the Sawgrass Expressway in Sunrise early Wednesday morning, officials say.

A little before 3 a.m., the 37-year-old woman was driving south in the northbound lanes of the expressway near the Oakland Park Boulevard exit before the crash occurred, according to Sunrise Fire Rescue Deputy Chief Chris Shannon. Two other vehicles, a semi-truck without a trailer attached and another passenger car, were involved in the crash.

The woman was dead by the time paramedics got to the scene, Shannon said. The drivers of the two other vehicles, a man and a woman, were both transported to the hospital.

The northbound lanes of the expressway near the scene of the crash remained closed late Wednesday morning. Florida Highway Patrol is investigating, Shannon said.
