
The Seminole Ridge girls flag football program captured its sixth state title in school history with a 26-2 victory against Chiles in the Class 3A state championship game at AdventHealth Training Center in Tampa on Saturday night.
Seminole Ridge (17-2), ranked No.1 nationally by MaxPreps, won its first flag football state title since 2016.
Sophomore quarterback Aubrey Fogel had four touchdown passes in the state title contest. Senior wide receiver Lola Agosto had two touchdown catches while senior Dakota Parks and junior Jazlyn Ruiz both scored to help lift the Hawks.
“We have a great tradition here and it’s a nice to win it again,” Seminole Ridge coach Scott O’Hara said. “We want to keep the legacy going. There is a lot of enthusiasm and flag football is so big in our community.”
Chiles recorded a safety and had a 2-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. Seminole Ridge responded as Fogel connected with Agosto for a score late in the second quarter.
The Hawks held a five-point advantage at halftime and increased the lead to 13-2 at the end of the third quarter. Parks and Agosto both scored in the fourth quarter.
“We had some nerves early in the game and we settled down,” O’Hara said. “Chiles has a really good team. We knew it was going to be a challenge. We were prepared and our girls stepped up. Aubrey has been just amazing. She made some great throws like she has done all year.”
Seminole Ridge defeated East Bay 18-0 in the Class 3A state semifinal. The game was scoreless at the end of the first quarter. The Hawks jumped out to a 12-0 advantage entering halftime. Fogel had three touchdown passes and Agosto scored twice.
Sophomore Chachi Saunders added a touchdown catch and recorded an interception on defense.
Seminole Ridge crushed Lakeland 53-0 in the regional quarterfinal, cruised past Martin County 33-0 in the regional semifinal and defeated Belleview 26-6 in the regional final.
Wellington outlasted in OT in 4A final
The Wellington girls flag football team fell in heartbreaking fashion during a 21-20 loss in overtime against Tampa Alonso in the Class 4A state championship game.
Wellington (17-2) trailed 14-0 at the end of the first quarter. Senior quarterback Ava Hanson connected with junior wide receiver Avery Schroeder for a touchdown to cut the deficit to 14-7 in the second quarter. The Wolverines rallied in the third quarter to tie the score at 14-14.
Hanson fired a scoring pass to senior Angelia Bistrong to open the scoring in overtime, but the Wolverines failed to convert the extra point. Alonso responded with a touchdown and winning extra point to capture the state title.
Wellington defeated Spruce Creek 19-0 in the Class 4A state semifinal. They also cruised past Freedom 39-6 in the regional quarterfinal, had a 25-20 victory against Harmony in the regional semifinal and earned a 27-19 victory against Fort Pierce Central in the regional final.
Dr. Joaquin Garcia falls in OT in 2A semi
Dr. Joaquin Garcia entered the Class 2A state semifinal unbeaten before a 20-19 loss in overtime against Choctawhatchee.
The Bulldogs (17-1) rallied from a 13-0 deficit at the end of the third quarter. Senior Abigial Quinn had a touchdown catch in the fourth quarter to make it 13-6. Quinn converted a game-tying extra point late in the fourth. She also recorded a touchdown catch to open the scoring in overtime. The Bulldogs failed on the extra point.
Choctawhatchee had a touchdown and game-winning extra point to earn the victory.
The Bulldogs cruised past Suncoast 21-6 in the regional quarterfinal, rolled past Miami Norland 19-0 in the regional semifinal and defeated Miami Northwestern 20-13 in the regional final.
Somerset Academy Canyons dispatched in 1A semi
Somerset Academy Canyons had its playoff run fall short in a 32-13 loss to Wildwood in the Class 1A state final four.
Somerset Academy Canyons (16-4) trailed 7-6 after the first quarter and faced a 14-6 deficit at halftime. The Cougars were unable to overcome a 20-13 deficit after three quarters and were held scoreless in the fourth.
Sophomore quarterback Ava Wotipka finished with two touchdown passes. Freshman Avery Demayo and sophomore Jazlyne James both scored in the loss.
The Cougars had a 34-0 victory against Atlantic in the regional quarterfinal, 41-0 win against Gateway Charter in the regional semifinal and defeated David Posnack 33-6 in the regional final.
