Coast Guard seizes $6 million worth of cocaine off the coast of Broward County

FORT LAUDERDALE (CBS12) — The U.S. Coast Guard seized about 550 pounds of cocaine off the coast of Fort Lauderdale.

According to the Coast Guard, the cocaine was taken from drug smugglers on Monday and had a street value of $6 million.

According to the Coast Guard’s news release, the law enforcement crew seized the 36-foot vessel and transferred the suspected smugglers to Coast Guard agents to face federal prosecution.

“The Coast Guard and our federal, state, and local law enforcement partners remain vigilant in our shared efforts to keep our maritime borders safe by preventing illicit narcotics from reaching our communities,” said Lt. Daniel Sunday.

Law enforcement partners from Customs and Border Protection Air and Marine Operations Southeast Region, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, and the Broward County Sheriff’s Office also assisted in the detection.
