It’s an off-Broadway show about offing people.
The horror hilarity of “SAW The Musical: The Unauthorized Parody of Saw” is hacking its way into Fort Lauderdale’s Broward Center for the Performing Arts with two psycho shows: on Sunday, Jan 12, and Tuesday, Jan. 14.
Billed as “Shop of Horrors meets Avenue Q” — and perhaps even a little more provokingly as “a love story with fluidity (and lots more fluids)” — the musical comedy has adult themes and explicit content. It is for 18-and-older audiences.
There’s a tap number with a puppet! And a queer romance theme, possibly making this a new genre: Horror Rom-Com! Oh, and those in the rows near the stage need to know that you could be in a “splash zone.” That’s probably enough said about that.
For those of you who never saw “Saw,” the movie franchise first hit the silver screen in 2004. The films are centered around The Jigsaw Killer, who creates brilliantly evil traps and scenarios where victims are forced to inflict horrific pain — um, just think about that title — on themselves or poor souls who are also held captive. There are 10 “Saw” movies.
And now there’s a musical … though it’s an unauthorized spoof with the required guts and added giggles. The show bowed in the AMT Theater in the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood of New York City back in 2023 and is now also playing at The NuBox theater in the same enclave.
“SAW The Musical” was created by Cooper Jordan (“DEX! A Killer Musical,” “The Rat Pack Undead”) with a score by Patrick Spencer and Anthony De Angelis (“An Axemas Story”).
