Ticket alert: Ruth Markel, mother of slain son, to share her story of grief and resilience at JAFCO talk

Ruth Markel, mother of slain Florida professor Dan Markel, will explore her search for insight in the face of obstacles as part of a panel on Sunday, Dec. 22, at JAFCO Children’s Village in Sunrise.

Markel is the author of “The Unveiling: A Mother’s Reflection on Murder, Grief, and Trial Life” (Post Hill Press; 2022), in which she shares the loss of her son, a Florida State University law professor, who was murdered in Tallahassee in 2014. The book also reveals her experiences with the legal system as she has sought justice and struggled to stay in touch with Dan’s two sons.

Also on the panel: Palm Beach County State Attorney Dave Aronberg and journalist Joel Waldman, author of “Surviving the Survivor: A Brutally Honest Conversation about Life (& Death) With My Mom, a Holocaust Survivor, Therapist & My Podcast Co-Host” (Post Hill Press; 2024).

Markel and Waldman are expected to sign copies of their books after the conversation.

JAFCO, or Jewish Adoption and Family Care Options, operates a nonprofit children’s emergency shelter and has six group homes on its Sunrise campus.
