Search on for man accused of shooting and killing his stepfather in Plantation

A man accused of shooting and killing his stepfather in Plantation has evaded police for three days.

Haile Selassie Richards, 27, allegedly shot his stepfather, Clayous Peart, 57, at a home in the 7000 block of West Sunrise Boulevard on Saturday morning shortly before 11:30 a.m., then fled in his mother’s car, Plantation Police said in a news release Tuesday.

Richards’s mother, who is Peart’s wife, was at the home during the shooting, Det. Robert Rettig, a department spokesperson, said in the release. Richards crashed her car in the 6500 block of West Sunrise Boulevard and ran.

Officers had spread out through the surrounding area looking for Richards, who they believed might have still been armed because they did not find a gun in the car he abandoned, according to first responders’ radio transmissions archived by the streaming site Broadcastify. He had been seen by officers running throughout the area near where the shooting happened.

They set up perimeters in Plantation and in Sunrise, and police dogs and a Broward Sheriff’s Office helicopter also searched, but Richards had not been found as of Tuesday night, the police department said. Detectives are “currently following up on leads” about where he may be, the department said.

Tips that lead to Richards’s arrest may be eligible for up to a $10,000 reward. The police department asked anyone with information to contact Broward County Crime Stoppers at (954) 493-8477 or at 1-866-493-8477.
