This is “Small Bites,” a South Florida Sun Sentinel feature with tiny tidbits on the food and beverage scene — because we know that sometimes you just don’t have room for a long article. You want a little news brief instead, an amuse bouche of information, if you will. Enjoy!
WHAT: It’s a culinary marriage made in sub-sandwich heaven.
The couple? That would be reality TV celebrity Big Ed from “90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days” and Capriotti’s Plantation. The two will cuddle up together as they present The Big Ed Sub for a limited time.
Like its man-muse, the sandwich is impressive: The eatery has taken its iconic The Bobbie sandwich and glamorized it with 24-karat gold flakes.
Big Ed will be hanging out at the shop this Friday and Saturday, taking photos and actually making sandwiches for foodie fans.
“When Big Ed expressed his love for Capriotti’s, especially for The Bobbie, we knew we had to do something special with the recently opened Capriotti’s in Plantation,” Louisa Warwick, who handles Capriotti’s public relations and marketing, told the South Florida Sun Sentinel. “That’s why we created a 24K Gold Flake version of the sandwich, called The Big Ed Sub.
“The Bobbie has always been a fan favorite, inspired by the classic Thanksgiving leftovers sandwich, and this limited edition is our way of celebrating our partnership with Big Ed and sharing something extraordinary with Capriotti’s customers.”
For the uninitiated, The Bobbie (aka The Big Ed, for a limited time) is made up of slow-roasted turkey topped with cranberry sauce, mayonnaise and Capriotti’s very own handmade stuffing.
WHEN: 4-6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13, and noon-2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14
WHERE: Capriotti’s Plantation, 1023 S. University Drive
COST: The Big Ed (an 18-inch The Bobbie sub with gold flakes) sub is $29.99; a portion of the proceeds will benefit Remembering Nicholas Foundation, a charity helping those who have suffered infant loss
ABOUT ED: Edward “Big Ed” Brown became known to viewers for some memorable meme-worthy moments on the TLC show, “90 Day Fiancé”. The San Diego resident has the rare congenital condition Klippel-Feil syndrome, which is characterized by the fusion of cervical vertebrae, and works as a photographer. In one scene, Big Ed — self-described as “The Villain” — gave his intended a toothbrush, toothpaste and mouthwash because he claimed her breath was “not pretty.” He did get officially engaged eventually to another woman after an on-again, off-again, and-back-on-again, relationship. But at their engagement party, Big Ed accused her of having an affair with her bestie and later called off the wedding via a text message.
EXTRA TIDBIT: Capriotti’s was established in Wilmington, Delaware, in 1976. The American fast-casual chain is known for subs and sandwiches.
“We are so excited to host Big Ed at Capriotti’s in Plantation,” adds Marco Roca Jr., owner of the Capriotti’s Plantation franchise. “It is going to be a very fun day with games, prizes and special-edition 24K Gold flake subs made by Big Ed himself!”
