76-year-old husband charged in murder of Tamarac woman, staged burglary to cover it up, deputies say

A 76-year-old man shot his wife to death in Tamarac, then staged a burglary to cover up what he had done, deputies say.

Rollan Powell was arrested Thursday and is now charged with first-degree murder with a firearm in the killing of 53-year-old Janice Herbet, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.

A little before midnight on March 15, deputies had responded to reports of a shooting at the couple’s home on Northwest 45th Court in Tamarac, the Sheriff’s Office said in a release. There, they found Herbert with a gunshot wound. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives said that Powell “appeared to stage a burglary to cover up the homicide and provided inconsistent statements to detectives regarding the incident,” according to the news release.

He is being held in Broward Main Jail without bond.
