Two men shot at Fort Lauderdale block party that drew crowd of 1,000, police say

Two men were shot at a block party in Fort Lauderdale that drew a massive crowd Sunday night, and police are searching for the shooter or shooters who fled.

An alert generated by SoundThinking, formerly known as ShotSpotter, which is technology that detects the sound of gun shots, alerted officers to the 800 block of Northwest Eighth Avenue shortly before 9 p.m. Sunday.

A crowd of about 1,000 people had to be cleared for Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue to reach the scene, Det. Ali Adamson, a police department spokesperson, said.

Officers treated the men until fire rescue arrived, and both were taken to Broward Health Medical Center as trauma alerts, Adamson said.

One of the men was expected to recover and said he did not want to prosecute. The second man was in serious but stable condition and remained hospitalized Monday, Adamson said.

Authorities ask anyone with information about the shooting to contact Fort Lauderdale Police.
