98-year-old man dies after being hit by 86-year-old driver, deputies say

A 98-year-old man died Monday evening after he was struck by a 86-year-old driver while walking on his street west of Boynton Beach, according to deputies.

George Fortier was walking west on the inside of a right-hand curve in the road in the 7200 block of Summer Tree Drive, where he lived, shortly before 3:30 p.m. as an 86-year-old man driving a 2010 Mercedes-Benz GLK350 was driving east and struck Fortier as he negotiated the curve, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office said.

The impact thrust Fortier into the air, and he landed a short distance away from where he was struck, the Sheriff’s Office said. The driver stayed at the scene. He was not injured.

Fortier was taken to Delray Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead shortly before 7 p.m., the Sheriff’s Office said.
