Crisp, sunny days are ahead, but New Year’s Eve will be nippy

Thursday’s rain will give way to cooler drier air sweeping down from the Midwest on Friday and Saturday, leading to a New Year’s Eve weekend that’s likely to have the coldest nights of the season.

Daytime temperatures Saturday and Sunday will be in the upper 60s along coastal Palm Beach and Broward counties while nighttime temperatures will drop to the low 50s.

National Weather Service meteorologist Shawn Bhatti said that breezes vacillating around 10 mph through the weekend will bring the wind chill temperatures at night in the metro area to about 50 degrees, or maybe the upper 40s.

The western suburbs will be cooler, possibly dipping into the upper 40s Saturday and Sunday evening. The coldest area of South Florida will be the agricultural areas south and west of Lake Okeechobee, where temperatures could drop as low as 43 degrees.

Interior regions could experience fog Friday morning.
