FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Dr. Steve Orris, the Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Performance & Student-Athlete Wellness, partnered with the Special Olympics of Broward County and hosted a powerlifting competition at the Nova Southeastern Sports Performance Facility on Sunday, September 17th. The competition included events in bench press, dead lift and squats.
“NSU Athletics has a long-standing relationship with the Special Olympics of Broward County,” said Dr. Orris. “We appreciate any opportunity that allows our student-athletes to serve and interact with diverse populations. I’m proud that our student-athletes learn as much as they teach during these interactions.”
Eight Special Olympic athletes participated in the event, which was assisted by Hayley Lynch, NSU Softball, and members of the Nova Southeastern Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
Outside of his administrative role within the Sharks Athletic Department, Dr. Orris also teaches Special Olympic athletes in adaptive physical education. The adaptive physical education courses also feature community fitness curriculum, which allows exercise science majors at Nova Southeastern to gain practical experience.
