Police searching for man who stole car, kidnapped woman in downtown Fort Lauderdale

An armed man carjacked a vehicle in downtown Fort Lauderdale early Saturday morning before driving off with a woman inside, officials say. Police later found the woman and the car, but the suspect remains on the loose.

A little after 5 a.m., Fort Lauderdale Police received a call about a possible kidnapping near 100 block of Southwest 2nd Avenue, according to Casey Liening, a spokesperson for the police department. The street in downtown Fort Lauderdale is lined with several bars and clubs.

A man and a woman had been sitting in a car, the man in the drivers’ seat and the woman in the passenger seat, when the suspect approached them with a gun.

The man ran away, while the woman remained in the passenger seat, Liening said. The suspect then got into the drivers’ seat and drove away with the woman inside.

Liening did not provide details on the relationship between the man and woman, or say whether either of them knew the suspect.

Fort Lauderdale Police and the Broward Sheriff’s Office “gathered information” on the woman and the vehicle, and found them soon after on Interstate 95 near Oakland Park Boulevard. The woman is being treated for non-life threatening injuries, Liening said.

The suspect, meanwhile, fled on foot before police got to the car and remains on the loose.

Fort Lauderdale Police ask anyone with information to contact them immediately. Anonymous callers can contact Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477(TIPS).
