Teen shot and killed in Fort Lauderdale: police

A 16-year-old was shot dead in Fort Lauderdale early Sunday, police said.

Fort Lauderdale police received an alert from SoundThinking, the technology formerly known as ShotSpotter, that uses sound sensors to detect and locate outdoor gunfire in real time.

The incident happened just after 2 a.m. between the 700 and the 900 block of NW 9th Avenue. While police were already responding, they got a call about gunshot victims. The teen was found and brought to the hospital, but later pronounced dead.

“The victim was inside of a vehicle at the time of the shooting with several other people and preliminary information indicates the shooter may have been in a different vehicle,” said police spokesperson Casey Liening. “This is an ongoing homicide investigation as we work to determine the circumstances leading up to this incident.”
