More heat expected for South Florida, with feels-like temps still reaching 110 degrees

There’s no end in sight for these stifling hot days across South Florida, with the weather service on Thursday reminding the public to take precaution and stay safe in this stifling weather.

Temperatures will peak in the low- to mid-90s during the afternoons. But the heat index, or the feels-like temperatures, calls for it seeming like it’s 105 to 110 degrees.

The National Weather Service’s heat advisory has now been extended through Friday evening for South Florida. Additional heat advisories may go through the weekend “as hot weather is expected to continue,” meteorologists said Thursday.

“The thing is, we have a very humid air mass, even overnight temperatures are only dropping into the low 80s,” said meteorologist Sammy Hadi.

And “we have a lot of sun, particularly late morning and early afternoon are the highest temperatures. Basically this is a recipe for high temperatures.”

“For the foreseeable future we’re going to have high temperatures low- to mid-90s” and in some places, inland, in the upper 90s, he said.

The advice is still important: wear sunscreen and comfortable clothing, stay hydrated, take breaks if you work outside, and “most importantly, check on the most vulnerable during heat waves,” Hadi said. That includes the elderly and small children. “Those are the two demographics that are the most vulnerable.”

There’s also a disturbance swirling in the Atlantic that has a 60% chance of developing. If it does, it will be called “Don.”

But it’s not worrisome to us here in Florida. It’s veering north into open waters and no threat to land.
