State Sen. Manny Diaz Jr. has been recommended by Gov. Ron DeSantis to be Florida’s next education commissioner.
The Republican senator, who represents a South Florida district that encompasses Hialeah, is in line to take over for Richard Corcoran, who announced in March he would be stepping down as education commissioner.
“Manny Diaz has done a great job in the Legislature on education issues ranging from teacher pay to parental rights and choice,” Gov. DeSantis said in a news release. “I am confident that he will serve our state well as the Commissioner of Education.”
Diaz will be the first Hispanic education commissioner in Florida’s history. Diaz, who has served in the state Legislature since 2012, previously was a teacher, coach, assistant principal and a school administrator.
