‘The city still needs Borscht’: Souped-up Borscht Film Festival screening weird art films in Miami

At its best, the movies of Borscht, founded in 2004 by students at New World School of the Arts, are funhouse mirrors reflecting the mood and melting-pot madness of Miami, Bassett says. And Borscht wears its weirdness as a badge of honor, its movies having gone on to capture acclaim at major museums and festivals around the globe including Sundance, Cannes, TriBeCa and the Guggenheim. The Oscar-winning made-in-Miami drama “Moonlight” sprang from an earlier collaboration with director Barry Jenkins and Borscht Corp., the youthful artist collective that programs the festival.
