A funeral for veteran Sun Sentinel columnist Gary Stein is scheduled for Friday afternoon.
Stein, of Coral Springs, retired from the paper in 2017 after 36 years. For 15 of those years, Stein penned some 3,500 columns for the metro section.
The 72-year-old died Wednesday at Coral Springs Medical Center, where he had been hospitalized with pneumonia since late March.
Friday’s funeral will be at 3:15 p.m. at Star of David Funeral Chapel 7701 Bailey Road in North Lauderdale.
In Stein’s years with the Sun Sentinel, he also served as the editor who oversaw the paper’s west office in Sunrise, training and mentoring young reporters.
His final stint would be as a member of the paper’s editorial board.
Originally from Chicago, Stein is survived by his wife of 30 years, Jackie, and their 27-year-old son Mark, a percussionist studying music performance at Rice University in Houston.
