A man died early Thursday after his SUV hit the side of a truck, got stuck underneath the tractor-trailer and dragged — all without the truck driver even realizing it, police said.
The deadly collision occurred about 5:51 a.m. on U.S. 27 at Pines Road in Pembroke Pines, police said. The fatal crash closed the southbound lanes of the highway, causing detours and lengthy delays.
Armas Gallego, 53, of Miami, died at the scene in west Broward County, said Sgt. John Baker, a spokesman for Pembroke Pines police.
Gallego was driving a 2013 Nissan Rogue northbound on the highway when it hit the rear of the driver’s side of the westbound semi as it entered the intersection, Baker said.
The driver of the 2012 Freightliner truck “was unaware of the collision and continued to turn and go southbound on U.S. 27,” Baker said.
The truck was south of Pembroke Road in Miramar before the driver “discovered that there was another vehicle stuck under the tractor-trailer,” he said.
Detectives urge anyone with information about the crash to contact the Pembroke Pines Police Department at 954-431-2200 or via email at tips@ppines.com.
