A BMW driver was likely speeding when he failed to negotiate a turn and crashed into a commercial building in Pompano Beach, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.
Erving Colon, 42, of Fort Lauderdale, died Saturday after crashing his 1998 BMW 328i sedan, said Joy Oglesby, a spokewoman for the sheriff.
Colon’s passenger, Anthony Boberg, 31, of Pompano Beach, was injured, she said.
“Detectives believe speed is a contributing factor,” Oglesby said. “Detectives also suspect that impairment is a possible contributing factor. Their investigation continues.”
The crash happened about 9:20 p.m. at 1000 SW 10th Ave, the sheriff’s office said.
The BMW was traveling north on the avenue when it failed to negotiate a turn in the road and continued north, crashing into the side of an unoccupied commercial building, Oglesby said.
Both men were taken to Broward Health North Medical Center in Deerfield Beach where Colon was pronounced dead. Boberg was treated and released, she said.
An online obituary said Colon lived in Margate. His funeral is scheduled for Saturday afternoon in Fort Lauderdale.
