Driver in fatal hit-and-run may not have realized someone was hit, cops say

The driver who struck a 60-year-old pedestrian who later died from his injuries my not have realized someone was hit, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.

Grigoiry Berkolayko was about 1 ½ miles from his Deerfield Beach home when he was hit Friday evening while crossing North Federal Highway at Northeast Eller Street, said Joy Oglesby, a spokeswoman for the agency.

As Berkolayko crossed the highway at about 7:20 p.m., an older model Chevy Silverado heading north hit him, Oglesby said.

Witnesses told investigators that the driver “slowed to a near stop and then turned west on Northeast Eller Street,” she said.
