Detectives search home near deadly Fort Lauderdale shooting; victim identified

A man died after he was found shot in a residential area of Fort Lauderdale early Wednesday morning, and the shooter has not yet been identified, police said.

Officers were notified of the shooting just after 3 a.m. in the 1300 block of Northwest Eighth Avenue by a ShotSpotter alert through the company SoundThinking, which detects the sound of gunfire.

Demetrius Lamar Jones, 34, was found with gunshot wounds when officers and Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue arrived, Det. Ali Adamson, a police department spokesperson, said Thursday. Jones was pronounced dead at Broward Health Medical Center.

Later that afternoon, Homicide Unit detectives obtained a warrant for “a nearby residence that may be connected to the homicide” and searched it, Adamson said.

Adamson did not provide further information about the ongoing investigation. No one had been arrested as of Thursday afternoon.

Detectives ask anyone with information to contact FLPD immediately, using the case number 34-2504-075646.
